Happy Mother's Day

ANZAC Day

I hope every one had a great ANZAC day weekend and spared some time to think about how lucky we are to live in this amazing country. They say an image tells a thousand words and on ANZAC day, I came across an image of 500 diggers being photographed on the side of a pyramid in Egypt, which stopped me in my tracks and made me read a little about it.

The picture was meant to be of 50 officers but 500 diggers decided they would climb the side of the pyramid just 20 meters behind to get themselves in the picture too! The end result was a amazing image which documented these Australian and New Zealand soldier’s having a laugh and a bit of fun, but essentially had 500 men shoulder to shoulder sitting, standing, leaning and jostling for position up a tiered section of pyramid going up 50 feet or so.

On one level in amongst the gathering were 3 men standing with their arms crossed together and interlinked. It turned out they were a father with his two sons. On another level there were 3 boys with their arms around each other together. They were all under 16years old (one was only 14yrs) and had lied about their age to go to war.

Note: The four gentleman with their arms crossed together are a father and his 3 sons. All of whom died together on the shores of Gallipoli.

Such little stories of mateship, trust and adventure could be seen in just about every grouping of the men in this picture. Some arm in arm, others laughing together with bayonet swords crossed.

475 of these 500 men died on the shores of Gallipoli only a week or so after this image was taken (including the father with his sons and the 14,15 & 16-year-old boys. This picture really did tell a thousand words and moved me on ANZAC day. What an amazing image that truly captured the essence of the ANZAC spirit.

Good photography will tell such a story and truly capture a moment in time.

Charities

There are some great charity events that Limelite is involved with coming up in the next few months. If you feel like a great night out and helping raise some much need funds The Tina Robinson Memorial Dinner is being held at Miramare Gardens conference centre in Terrey Hills.

Tina Robinson was a Sydney Northern Beaches local with a one-year-old daughter when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, following complications in surgery she was left unable to care for herself or her daughter and lived out the last months of her life in an elderly Nursing Home. The memorial dinner is in her honour and is looking to raise $25000 in funds for the Chris Obrien cancer centre "LifeHouse" at RPA and awareness of the need for age appropriate Nursing Homes.

In order to raise these funds we are selling tickets to the dinner being held at Miramare Gardens conference centre in Terrey Hills and we will be holding both live (for items valued at over $500) and silent auctions plus raffles and more on the evening.

Will the advancements and development of consumer digital cameras be the end of the professional photographer

This is a question I am asked alot these days and it nearly always makes me think back to the days when I was stating out as a young photographer and my only camera was a 35mm film Nikon FM2. It was a fully manual camera with no automation of any kind. No auto focus or exposure and was kind of beat up...alot.

I would be on jobs with some clients kind of giving my less than impressive looking camera gear a bit of a concerned glance. But the final product from this old gal was amazing. The moral of the story was that equipment does not make the photographer. Composition, light, depth of field, movement, colour, emotion, timing and decades of experience will never be replaced with technology. But technology combined with all of the before mentioned qualities and you are now talking about what a professional photographer brings to every single image they take.

If given the choice between a good photographer with a old beat up camera or a amature photographer with top of the line professional DSLR i know I would go with the good photographer above the good equipment any day.

The ability to capture breath taking imagery takes years if not decades and no camera is going to you that kind of know how. Often at weddings I would have people come up to me with their camera and show me a image they had taken of the wedding and say "what do you think?, I should be a professional photographer" and I normally say "yeah great image but before you can be a professional photographer you need to make every image that good every time". This is the reality of being a professional photographer.
